Can a White Rug, Two Dogs and a Toddler Co-exist? Yes, and I’ll show you how.

You’re probably wondering, and I get asked this ALL THE TIME, “How do you have a white rug in your living room with a German Shepherd Husky, a Chihuahua and a Toddler?” Well, I will admit, it’s not the easiest, but I’ve committed. I have a few tricks up my sleeve, and I refuse to compromise on style, just because I have pets and a kid.

Tip #1: Layer Your Rugs

Yes, I’m aware that I’m probably setting myself up for unnecessary stress by putting a 9x12 white rug in our living room, but I have a trick. I layer a machine washable area rug over the white base rug. I have this one from Urban Outfitters that I love because it gives the room added texture, and that layered look, but if Coyote spills something on it, I toss it in the washing machine. No harm, no foul.

Tip #2: Shoes off at the Door

My family and I love traveling internationally. You learn so much from other cultures by traveling. My husband and I have been to Bali a few times, and it’s truly one of our favorite places on earth. In Bali, they believe that your home is your temple and a sacred place. One of the ways they show respect for their home and for other’s homes, is to remove your shoes before entering, and leave them at the door. A practice we’ve adopted in our own home. And the bonus is that you keep your rugs and your home that much cleaner. I’m also a Jewelry Designer, and part of my work takes me downtown Los Angeles multiple times a week. Trust me, if you look down and take one look down at the parking lot or the sidewalk, and then think about tracking that into your home, I guarantee you, you won’t want shoes worn in your house either! The same goes for any parking lot, to me it’s just gross.

Tip #3: Get a Ruggable Rug

Have you ever looked at a home blogger’s instagram and seen a beautiful Serena & Lily cream rug under their dining room table and wonder how in the heck it’s there?? Especially when you know how much it costs?? Me too! I mean it’s been kind of infuriating for me. Pretty sure Coyote drops half of his dinner on the floor every night. I recently purchased a Ruggable Rug, and let me tell you, our dining room dilemma has been solved! The velcro base stays on the floor to provide cushion and grip, while the top layer is machine washable! Score! Before, our dining room lacked warmth and style, and now I can have both: style and function.

In our bedroom, I have another Urban Outfitters rug. I’m not sure if you’re supposed to machine wash it, but I do:) I have a rug pad underneath and since Rogue sleeps on it at night, it gets dirty pretty quickly. I probably machine wash it once a week.

So that’s it! And get some Resolve!
