Blanco Bungalow Kitchen Reno: Week 5

It’s week 5 of our kitchen renovation. We have the first layer of micro-cement on the sink side, and we’re painting on the elastosheild membrane on the cabinets below.

The elastoshield is one of the most crucial parts of this process, as it prevents everything from cracking. It allows small movement while keeping everything intact.

What a mess!

We’re going to add an open side cabinet to the right of the stove, so we still have that yet to build.

Last night Bardo added the first layer of micro-cement on the cabinets below the sink. Next, we’ll build the shelves inside of them.

Slowly coming together…

It’s such a tricky process of layers and layers and sanding and smoothing.

Now we’re starting to build the little shelves in between. We moved the dishwasher space to the right of the sink because it was previously to the left and when it was open, you couldn’t walk back and forth between the dining room. So we moved the dishwasher to the right, and we’ll leave the space to the left for a wine fridge. The skinny cabinets on the far outsides will be open storage.

I love Bardo’s methods for building. It’s all very simple and intuitive and isn’t super overthought:). Here he’s bracing the concrete paver with wood and other bricks. He’ll keep the braces until the cement is dry.

And now to work on the other side of the kitchen. He placed a mesh wire panel down before he will apply cement to the base of the cabinet. We’re using Quikrete as the base, then the elastoshield, then microcement.

We’re also adding these metal edge protectors to the corners of the cabinets and counters.

He’s keeping them on with clamps until the patch adhesive dries.

And next, he’ll add a layer of cement over the metal corner pieces.

And if you can see, the far left is where the old ice box was, which formerly served as our pantry. We chose to extend the counter space, and move the refrigerator to the laundry area.

So this is where we’re at for Week 5, stay tuned for next week!

We’re figuring this out as we go, so let’s hope it turns out like the dream kitchen I have in my mind.
