Blanco Bungalow Kitchen Reno Week 8: Hood Installation, Choosing Floating Shelf Samples, and More & More Microcement
It’s week 8 of our kitchen renovation. The kitchen is starting to take shape and slowly look like my dream kitchen.
This week, we’re installing our hood from Forte Appliances, we’re patching the old holes in the walls and ceiling, and adding more and more layers of micro-cement, and I have to choose between wood samples for our floating shelves.
I’ve collaborated with Shelfology on this project. They are sending me custom-made floating wood shelves in place of upper cabinets, I just need to choose from the samples above. Since the kitchen is small, I want to make it feel as large as possible, and keeping the upper half open will help achieve that. Above, we have Raw Unfinished Alder (left) and Raw Unfinished Ash (right). I personally don’t love how stripey the Ash is, so my gut is leaning towards Alder. Alder is also half of the price of white oak, so that’s a win too.
We’ll install two floating shelves along this wall that will wrap around the corner to the stove.
We’re also adding two floating shelves on either side of the windows.
The window situation has been a bit of a shit show. We had to cut off the window sill to make room for the faucets. But there was a bit of confusion about what I wanted. I wanted to take off the entire trim surrounding the windows and either replace it or smooth it out with microcement. However, we ended up with sort of a strange situation of half of it removed, and half of it still remaining. Whatever:)
On the surface, this week doesn’t appear to have a ton of progress, but our sink is in, the hood is in, and tons of layers of micro-cement and sanding. Such a process!
I will say too, that I’ve always loved crisp white walls, but after micro-cementing the walls with a softer white, it makes the whole space feel so much richer.
I think in any future home we have, I’m going lime wash all the way.
